We had the pleasure of photographing Roberto & Araceli's wedding at San Francisco's City Hall.

Most of the day, we tried to not get any random people in the background of Araceli & Roberto's wedding photos. That being said, I really like seeing those randoms, in this last photo. It gives an editorial feel and you really get the sense that they are in the city. There are so many great spots at San Francisco City Hall for photos...and the architecture is gorgeous! Roberto & Araceli made an excellent venue choice!!!

Derrick & Brendy's Wedding

Winter weddings call for metallic details and this wedding was no exception. From the bride's champane gown to the silver cake, this wedding is sure to inspire you.

Isn't this bouquet just gorgeous?

The peacock feathers were given to them by a friend who has the birds.

Brendy's bridal shoes.

The metallic silver cake was adorned with purple and blue colors. These colors were repeated throughout the wedding decor.

The centerpieces featured silver peacock details which tied together the metallic theme with the peacock feathers in the bride's bouquet.

It was raining very heavily throughout Derrick & Brendy's wedding day, so we met back up with them, after their honeymoon, to take some formal portraits outside.

Brendy's favorite color is purple, so Derrick opted for a colored stone...which is so on trend right now.

We found some romantic sun-flare for the newlyweds.

Obviously, with the metallic theme, we needed to shoot at a metallic wall. :)

They were styled to perfection from head to toe...literally! Karen's Dolce & Gabbana multicolor pumps conveyed a look of timeless sophistication and allure with a stunning detailed Maiolica print throughout and a glamorous crystal broach, at the pointed toes, for added beauty. Christian looked straight out of a men's fashion ad with his Christian Louboutin Casanopump loafers. Detailed with polished gold and silvertone studs and finished with the signature red sole. Sparks Ranch Resort sits on ten acres of lovely grounds, offering a private setting for a wedding.

This couple had so many unique touches.

We had the opportunity to shoot at so many great spots around the grounds.

Ashley is also a photographer, so she understands that the best time for natural light is during golden hour...

...the newlyweds were happy to sneak away for some formal portraits during sunset.

Shawn and Ashley spent the whole weekend, along with their friends and family, up at the resort. They surely enjoyed the pool area, which was then used as the setting for their wedding reception.

Big Basin Forest Engagement Photography

Michael and Emily often spend their weekends in Capitola, Ca...which is also going to be the location of their wedding, next year. They wanted to have forest engagement photography, which made Big Basin Redwoods State Park the perfect choice for their engagement session. We had a fantastic time exploring Big Basin with them! Big props to the both of them for being up for anything (and essentially to Emily for climbing up and over trees in a skirt and tall wedges)! We can hardly wait for their wedding!

Karly's sparkler portraits in Modesto, Ca

The summer has just began, and you know what that means: Sparkler pics are about to light up your social media feeds and the night! Sparkler pictures are fun and magical. I mean who doesn't love sparklers? They have become more and more popular at weddings and many use them to write words or draw during long exposures. We thought that we would get a jump on things and play with some sparklers of our own. Below are the results...and keep scrolling for some tips and tricks for capturing your own photos.

Ready to try it for yourself? Here's some tips and tricks for long-exposures:

Things you will need:

A LOT of sparklers.
A camera with manual settings.
A tripod.
A flash.
No ambient light.

Tips:

If you want to write a word, try to use one person per letter or use one person to write words in cursive. (An easy way to do this is to have the subject hold the sparkler and then have another person light another sparkler off of their already lite sparkler to write a word or make a shape. This makes it appear like the subject wrote the word, but in fact another person did. You can even come out from behind the camera, after tripping the shutter, and write the word yourself.)
Make sure to write the letters backwards so the camera sees the words the correct way.
Have your subject hold as still as possible, while the flash fires. The flash will help to stop their movement but it will not freeze them completely. So they still need to hold as still as possible.
If it's too dark to focus the camera, you can light a sparkler, hold it where you want your focus to be, and focus on it, or use a flashlight to set your focus before you start your exposure.
Shutter speed should be anywhere between 3 seconds and 30 seconds, depending on what kind of shape we wanted Karly to draw. To draw a simple circle, it wouldn't take any longer then 3 seconds. To draw something more elaborate, you would need more time. Since it is dark outside, you can get away with leaving your shutter open for a long time.
Count out loud, during the exposure, so everyone has the same timing, “One-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, one-thousand-three.” (The motion to draw or create letters should start on “one” and end on “three.”)
An aperture of anywhere between f/11 or f/16 works well. The higher your aperture the more your sparkler will be defined. If you are more wide open your sparkler will appear less defined and more like balls of light.

Steps:

Place your camera on a tripod.
Think about what you want to draw and set the shutter speed to last for the right amount of time.
Set your aperture.
Have your subject stand in place and focus on them.
Fire a test shot with your flash to make sure that everything is exposed properly, before using sparklers. Once you have a good looking photo, with out sparklers, you know that you are ready for the real shot.
Pose your subject, light the sparkler, release the shutter, your flash will fire. Once the flash has gone off, let the sparkler movement begin.

We were excited to hear that Meghan & Blake chose Apple Hill for their engagement session location, because we had never been there and really wanted to check it out. The couple visits Apple Hill every year, so it was very special for them to be able to pose for engagement photos here. Apple hill did not disappoint. There were so many awesome photo locations! We had a blast driving around with Meghan, Blake, and Blake's mom, visiting farms, orchards, and wineries. It was an absolute pleasure taking their dreamy, rustic engagement pictures in Apple Hill. We can't wait for their wedding in December!

Monica, getting her dress laced up, by her mother. - Some photos are too pretty not to repeat. We have been doing this shot for over 10 years. Although, we capture new and unique photographs for every wedding, some photographs stand the test of time. If we are photographing your wedding and your dress laces-up, we are going to capture this photo for you...because who wouldn't want this?

As soon as we pulled into the parking lot for the National Hotel, we saw this little balcony and though "humm, wonder if that's attached to their room?"...and it was!!!

Monica mentioned that she liked the street lamps in Nevada City, so we made sure to include one in their portraits.

Downtown Nevada City has an endless supply of photo opportunities.

When we saw this wall, we knew we needed to shoot there!

There was a light rain all through Darren & Monica's pre-ceremony portraits, but they didn't let it bother them.

We had the opportunity to shoot at so many spots before the wedding. Thanks so much to Darren and Monica for giving us so much time for portraits!!

The Upper Gallery at Miners Foundry is a great setting for a wedding! Darren and Monica did a wonderful job of making this space their own with the addition of trees and rustic flower arrangements.

The Stone Hall was the perfect setting for this gorgeous reception. It was built in 1859 using native stone and heavy exposed beams. Today, it features also include charming chandeliers, a working stone fireplace, and antique furnishings.

After their ceremony, the rain was heaver then before, but the nice people at Nevada City Winery invited us into their barrel room for portraits.

Philip & April's Wedding

How cute is this? April has dog tags attached to her bouquet. Included is hers, her husband Phil's, and both of their father's.

We are very impressed with the bouquets that April and her maid of honor made for themselves!

This is Phil and April's wedding rings, on top of the journal that April put her note for Phil to read before their ceremony. Phil's note to April was on a scroll, that his best man Mike delivered to her room.

Can you spot the waterfall, in the background? Phil & April had so many personal details to make their day uniquely theirs...including the Hawaiian wedding leis, made by one of their guests, that they are wearing in this photo. Phil and April are both in the Navy and they met while serving in Hawaii. So if you were wondering how Yosemite in the winter and Hawaiian leis go together, after learning a bit about the newlyweds, it makes perfect sense.

The snow covered trees are just gorgeous!!!

We have always wanted to photograph a wedding in Yosemite National Park and we finally got to. This wedding had everything; snow covered landscape, great natural light, and a truly wonderful couple! We really couldn't have asked for anything more....that is until the newlyweds were approached by a deer, during portraits!!! It was such an incredible experience!

We are always willing to take photo suggestions for the couple. This was a request from Phil & April.

Night Engagement Session at The Living Desert Wild Lights in Palm Desert

Last week, we had the pleasure of photographing Ryan and Katarina's night engagement session at The Living Desert's Wild Lights display in Palm Desert, Ca. Sometimes things just work out for the best. We had not set out to do a night engagement session, but with the winter days being so short, it can be hard to find a time, with daylight, when everyone has time in their busy schedules. Fortunately, the WildLights Festival at The Living Desert was in full swing. With over 750,000 twinkling lights illuminating the park after dark, this annual event turns the desert into a winter wonderland. The extensive light display created the perfect setting for a romantic engagement session.

When Jill told us that she wanted to use Downtown Modesto as the location for her high school senior portraits, we got really excited for her shoot! We love using architectural elements for backgrounds and downtown provides an urban, edgy look, that’s great for senior photos. Jill said that she had scouted some spots that she liked and we were very intrigued to see which ones we had used before and if she would introduce us to any new spots…which she did! Even though we photograph downtown often, we still love to explore. Jill did a great job matching her outfits to each location that we used! As senior portrait photographers, we have discovered many great locations, and we would have to say that San Francisco is one of our very favorite photo destinations. SF has so much to offer and provides such a wide array of photography settings, which we really took advantage of for Katie’s senior pictures. We had the most perfect day for her session and utilized four fantastic locations! Ways to Incorporate Your Pet Into Your Wedding Day!

We love our pets like children and include them in as much as we can. If you feel the same about your pets, then you might be considering including them in your wedding. You know your pet better than anyone else, so be honest and ask yourself if including your pet in your big day is a realistic option. Is your pet shy or does it get stressed easily? You will have enough to worry about, you wouldn't want your pet to take away from your day.

Here are 3 ways that you can include your pet in the festivities, without actually bringing them to your wedding.
1. Guys, if you haven't popped the question yet, you can use your pet to propose.
2. Include them in your save the date or engagement photos.
3. If you are getting ready at home, take a break from your pre-wedding beauty routine to show your pet some love. Cuddling with a fluffy pet is one surefire way to get rid of wedding day jitters.

If you decide that your pet will be an asset on your big day, be sure that your venue is pet friendly. Then, designate a handler. Have someone on hand to do the "dirty work": feed your dog, take it to potty, and in a worst case scenario, take it home. You will not regret having an extra hand!

Next decide what role you would like your pet to play. Maybe you want to keep it low key and just want to have your pup around. Or are you going to make your dog a member of your wedding party; ring bearer, "Best Dog", "Hound of Honor"? Having a young attendant escort your pet down the aisle is a great option for an animal that might be distracted by your guests....it's also very cute! It's a good idea to rehearse with your pet. This way they know what will be expected of them on the big day.

Now it's time for the fun part...What will your pet wear? A simple bow tie is a great way to give your pet a wedding ready look that they won't detest. Consider customizing your pet's look to match the wedding party's attire. Sometimes the only thing that your pint-size pooch needs is an accent in your signature shade. Draw inspiration from your bouquet and the groom's boutonniere when picking flowers for your pet. Another option, that you may not have thought about is that your something blue doesn't have to actually be on you. How darling it would be to have a blue collar and leash? Maybe your pet prefers the finer things in life. Formal attire doesn't need to be limited to you and your groom! A top hat and vest are sure to be a crowd pleaser.

A couple of last thoughts to consider. Be sure to visit the groomer to get your pet looking it's best. Lastly, if your pet is furry, you may want to include a lint roller in your day-of supplies.

Tips for a Better Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are a great way for us to get to know one another. Everyone responds differently, when in front of the camera. On your wedding day things can be a bit rushed and nerves might be high, so becoming comfortable with each other beforehand is priceless!

1. Ladies, wear more makeup than you usually do. Even though you may feel like it looks too fake or heavy in person, it will look better on camera. It is even a good idea to schedule your wedding make-up trial for the day of your engagement session.

2. Wear clothes that fit you well. Nothing too baggy or too tight as these things are accentuated on camera and usually end up not being very flattering.

3. Wear some color. Gone are the days where couples wear matching white shirts and jeans! Rich colors look fantastic; plum purple, deep red, dark green, etc. You and your love should coordinate your colors without being too "matchy matchy".

4. Accessorize! Belts, hats, scarves, and necklaces. Don't underestimate the power of some cool shoes at a photo shoot. Show your personality with your accessories. Look at some pictures in the style magazines if you are having trouble putting together a look.

5. Bring multiple options for outfits. It is always good to have choices.

6. Men, be aware of your socks. There is nothing worse than a great shot of you two with some white tube socks taking all the attention away.

7. Men, you might not want to wear your watch. Ok, I know I said to accessorize, but unless you have a Rolex, you may want to leave your watch at home. Watches can catch the light and become a big shiny distracting object.

8. Relax. The most important thing to remember is to try to relax. Focus on each other, not the camera. We will direct you and help you along the way. If we are not saying anything, just keep doing what your doing, it's looking great!

9. Some wonderful affectionate gestures that look great on camera...Guys: kiss her cheek or forehead. Girls: smile or close your eyes when he does. Whisper something sweet or dirty into each other's ears.

10. Remember that you are in love! That is why you are doing this. It is more about that than looking perfect. Be yourself and let us take care of the rest.

This summer we had the pleasure of photographing Jenna and Shawn's "Tiffany Blue" wedding at California’s Iconic Hotel Del Coronado. Considered one of America's most beautiful beach resorts, it is situated along 28 oceanfront acres on the quaint island of Coronado in San Diego. Built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, it is one of the most celebrated structures in the World. The Del, or Hotel Del, as the locals call it, is also one of the largest wooden structures in existance, and an outstanding example of beautiful and graceful Victorian architecture. In fact, the Travel Channel rated Hotel Del Coronado the number-one wedding destination in America. Jenna and Shawn fell in love with the resort's magical architecture and antiquities. Their ceremony was scheduled to take place on the Windsor Lawn overlooking the beach....but would you believe it?...We got rained out!!! When you are planning your dream wedding for August in San Diego, rain is the last thing on your mind. Who would have even thought about rain?....Not us, not the bride and groom, not the wedding planner, not the location, nobody! We checked the weather for weeks and everything looked great. Then, the day of, would you believe it? Rain!!! We would have been fine with roughing it in the rain (we have photographed in the rain before and we even photographed an outdoor wedding during a snow blizzard), but the ceremony was moved to the world-famous Coronet Room, at the last moment. The Coronet Room is known for its dramatic sugar-pine ceiling and whimsical crown shaped chandelier, designed by Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. Hundreds of white petals lined the aisle to greet Jenna as she made her way down to her groom, Shawn. We were planning for bright and sunny and ended up with dark and romantic. In the end what's important is Jenna and Shawn vowed to spend their lives together. After the ceremony, the rain had cleared up enough for everyone in attendance to release a beautiful monarch butterfly. It was an amazing site to see and to top it off, a butterfly even landed on Jenna's dress! The Hotel del Coronado's elegant ballroom features crystal chandeliers, tapestry draperies, built-in stage, and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Jenna and Shawn added their own personal touch with exquisite center pieces, tiffany blue linens, and stunning up-lighting. This wedding was truly full of surprises! While all of the wedding party made their grand entrance into the reception through the main doors, the newlyweds appeared, in a flash, on the stage!!! Everyone clapped with excitement as they went straight into their first dance as husband and wife. The surprises didn't stop there. During toasts, Jenna and Shawn received the keys to their first house...and before cutting their gorgeous cake, Shawn serenaded Jenna with a love song. Everything came together beautifully and we are so happy that we got to be a part of their big day!

In planning this woodsy boho chic bridal shoot, we had a vision of a bohemian bride in an enchanted forest. Cortney, our hair and makeup artist, helped us develop the soft bridal looks with a boho chic vibe, bold glamorous details, and bright pops of color which resulted in this stunning bohemian-style wedding inspiration. Ashley's hair looked effortlessly gorgeous. Her long flowing locks adorned with a sparkling tiara evoke thoughts of a fairy princess...a perfect look for the ceremony. Then, a more relaxed look for the reception, a soft and romantic low updo that is not too structured, topped with a spectacular floral headband. For a bohemian forest themed wedding we loved the simplicity of this free-spirited chiffon wedding gown. It's fitted at the waist and a bride would be comfortable in it all day long.

Part of being a good photographer involves continual growth and the ability to evolve. We love lighting and trying out new photography techniques. Here's a sneak peek into our bridal shoot with Ashley and a look at some of the photography techniques we used, ranging from classic to cutting edge.

Rembrandt lighting is a classic studio portrait photography technique. It's named after the Dutch painter Rembrandt who often painted his subjects with an illuminated triangle under the eye (on the darker side of their face). The look is popular because it's capable of producing images which appear both natural and compelling. We achieved the look by using one light (on our subject) and a reflector. To add even more interest, we placed two additional lights on the background and put blue gels on them.

Here we used a ring light to create a glamorous look. Ring lights are very common in the fashion industry and are known for their "signature" lighting pattern of the halo shadow around the model.

For this photo we did a bit of experimentation with a new photography technique that adds 'fashion lens blur’ or ‘flare’ to photos. By holding different objects in front of the lens you are able to catch light and create some lens diffraction/flare. This technique can be called "lens chimping", “hurding”, or "prisming". The results are pretty interesting. By just reflecting images in front of your camera lens it creates special effects and adds a bit of mystery and excitement. We really had fun playing with the unpredictable colors and textures it creates, pulling from the actual environment we were shooting in.

The vintage romance wedding theme is a very popular wedding trend this season. Cyndal's bridal session oozes with vintage romance. The dress is vintage and features beautiful lace applique and pearl embellishments. Bridal accessories are simple and elegant. Emily did a wonderful job with keeping Cyndal's hair and make-up right on trend. A sleek, low up-do is made even more stylish with a little root-lift at the back and a sophisticated side-parting, finished with curls through the ends. Minimal eye make-up works well with this look. Emily chose a soft cat-eye. The great thing about cat-eye liner is that while it's so popular right now, it's also a retro look, so it reads as totally classic in your photos and works with almost any wedding gown. Along with cat-eye makeup, another big makeup trend on the spring 2014 runways is pretty pink lips. Wedding experts agree that 2014 will be the year of true romance. Weddings are going softer and sweeter. Are you ready for this swoon-worthy trend? We are!

Jahaziel & Lacey's Vintage 1920's Inspired Wedding - The Grand 1401 in Fresno, Ca

For Jahaziel & Lacey’s wedding, we headed down to Fresno, Ca. The day started with getting ready photos at their respective parents houses. This fashionable couple had wonderful vintage 1920's details including tux with tails for the groom, bird cage veil for the bride, and beautiful cameo and feather embellishments on the waist band of the bridesmaids dresses...which were added by one of the bridesmaids! Then it was off to the Kingdom Hall for the wedding ceremony. After they tied the knot, we made a stop at the Woodward Park Shinzen Japanese Garden for formal portraits. As we walked the winding pathways, there were photo ops around every curve. From the double-moon bridge, to the waterfall, it was truly picturesque. We even had some peacocks willing to strike a pose. Our final stop of the day was The Grand 1401. Built in 1922, the building had the perfect 1920's feel. The main floor ballroom was truly elegant...love the chandeliers! The newlyweds cake had amazing vintage details as-well. True to the theme, music for the first dance was 1920's jazz. We really enjoyed capturing their big day. Thanks to all of the wonderful family members and friends who were so welcoming!

Kris & Amy tied the knot in a beautiful spring wedding at The Reata in Oakdale, California. Every wedding is unique and different … that’s part of what we love about photographing weddings! And it’s particularly fun when the couple infuses what they love in every day life into the wedding day. As you scroll down to see their wedding album, you will notice a cigar bar and a wonderfully designed dessert table with cupcakes, candy bar, and featuring a classic wedding cake with a football themed topper. The couple held their ceremony in the gorgeous wedding garden. Then everyone headed inside to the ballroom for the reception. The blue up-lighting on the red brick walls was exquisite! The day turned out absolutely wonderful for the newlyweds.
