Jenna & Shawn's Wedding at the Hotel del Coronado
This summer we had the pleasure of photographing Jenna and Shawn's "Tiffany Blue" wedding at California’s Iconic Hotel Del Coronado. Considered one of America's most beautiful beach resorts, it is situated along 28 oceanfront acres on the quaint island of Coronado in San Diego. Built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, it is one of the most celebrated structures in the World. The Del, or Hotel Del, as the locals call it, is also one of the largest wooden structures in existance, and an outstanding example of beautiful and graceful Victorian architecture. In fact, the Travel Channel rated Hotel Del Coronado the number-one wedding destination in America. Jenna and Shawn fell in love with the resort's magical architecture and antiquities. Their ceremony was scheduled to take place on the Windsor Lawn overlooking the beach....but would you believe it?...We got rained out!!! When you are planning your dream wedding for August in San Diego, rain is the last thing on your mind. Who would have even thought about rain?....Not us, not the bride and groom, not the wedding planner, not the location, nobody! We checked the weather for weeks and everything looked great. Then, the day of, would you believe it? Rain!!! We would have been fine with roughing it in the rain (we have photographed in the rain before and we even photographed an outdoor wedding during a snow blizzard), but the ceremony was moved to the world-famous Coronet Room, at the last moment. The Coronet Room is known for its dramatic sugar-pine ceiling and whimsical crown shaped chandelier, designed by Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. Hundreds of white petals lined the aisle to greet Jenna as she made her way down to her groom, Shawn. We were planning for bright and sunny and ended up with dark and romantic. In the end what's important is Jenna and Shawn vowed to spend their lives together. After the ceremony, the rain had cleared up enough for everyone in attendance to release a beautiful monarch butterfly. It was an amazing site to see and to top it off, a butterfly even landed on Jenna's dress! The Hotel del Coronado's elegant ballroom features crystal chandeliers, tapestry draperies, built-in stage, and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Jenna and Shawn added their own personal touch with exquisite center pieces, tiffany blue linens, and stunning up-lighting. This wedding was truly full of surprises! While all of the wedding party made their grand entrance into the reception through the main doors, the newlyweds appeared, in a flash, on the stage!!! Everyone clapped with excitement as they went straight into their first dance as husband and wife. The surprises didn't stop there. During toasts, Jenna and Shawn received the keys to their first house...and before cutting their gorgeous cake, Shawn serenaded Jenna with a love song. Everything came together beautifully and we are so happy that we got to be a part of their big day!

Bohemian Forest Themed Cherish the Dress Wedding Photoshoot
In planning this woodsy boho chic bridal shoot, we had a vision of a bohemian bride in an enchanted forest. Cortney, our hair and makeup artist, helped us develop the soft bridal looks with a boho chic vibe, bold glamorous details, and bright pops of color which resulted in this stunning bohemian-style wedding inspiration. Ashley's hair looked effortlessly gorgeous. Her long flowing locks adorned with a sparkling tiara evoke thoughts of a fairy princess...a perfect look for the ceremony. Then, a more relaxed look for the reception, a soft and romantic low updo that is not too structured, topped with a spectacular floral headband. For a bohemian forest themed wedding we loved the simplicity of this free-spirited chiffon wedding gown. It's fitted at the waist and a bride would be comfortable in it all day long.

Behind the scenes look into our Modesto Photo Studio
Part of being a good photographer involves continual growth and the ability to evolve. We love lighting and trying out new photography techniques. Here's a sneak peek into our bridal shoot with Ashley and a look at some of the photography techniques we used, ranging from classic to cutting edge.
Rembrandt lighting is a classic studio portrait photography technique. It's named after the Dutch painter Rembrandt who often painted his subjects with an illuminated triangle under the eye (on the darker side of their face). The look is popular because it's capable of producing images which appear both natural and compelling. We achieved the look by using one light (on our subject) and a reflector. To add even more interest, we placed two additional lights on the background and put blue gels on them.

Here we used a ring light to create a glamorous look. Ring lights are very common in the fashion industry and are known for their "signature" lighting pattern of the halo shadow around the model.
For this photo we did a bit of experimentation with a new photography technique that adds 'fashion lens blur’ or ‘flare’ to photos. By holding different objects in front of the lens you are able to catch light and create some lens diffraction/flare. This technique can be called "lens chimping", “hurding”, or "prisming". The results are pretty interesting. By just reflecting images in front of your camera lens it creates special effects and adds a bit of mystery and excitement. We really had fun playing with the unpredictable colors and textures it creates, pulling from the actual environment we were shooting in.

2014 Wedding Trend: Vintage Romance
The vintage romance wedding theme is a very popular wedding trend this season. Cyndal's bridal session oozes with vintage romance. The dress is vintage and features beautiful lace applique and pearl embellishments. Bridal accessories are simple and elegant. Emily did a wonderful job with keeping Cyndal's hair and make-up right on trend. A sleek, low up-do is made even more stylish with a little root-lift at the back and a sophisticated side-parting, finished with curls through the ends. Minimal eye make-up works well with this look. Emily chose a soft cat-eye. The great thing about cat-eye liner is that while it's so popular right now, it's also a retro look, so it reads as totally classic in your photos and works with almost any wedding gown. Along with cat-eye makeup, another big makeup trend on the spring 2014 runways is pretty pink lips. Wedding experts agree that 2014 will be the year of true romance. Weddings are going softer and sweeter. Are you ready for this swoon-worthy trend? We are!
